Ba Sing Se is the capital of the Earth Kingdom which encompasses nearly all of the nation's northeastern corner. The city is by far the largest in the World of Avatar, essentially being more of a small country than a mere city. As a testament to its grandeur, the Earth Kingdom's roadway network is centered on the city. Ba Sing Se means "Impenetrable City"; it is so named for its world-famous walls, the gates of which have no hinges or other hardware and are opened by the use of earthbending. Within the Outer Wall lies a large expanse of farmland, Lake Laogai, and several mountains. The Inner Wall encloses the city itself.

Underneath the palace, and possibly much of the city, lies Old Ba Sing Se, an ancient underground city deep within the earth. These catacombs are the remnants of the first settlement in the area, carved underground by earthbenders. As the old city spread to the surface, the caverns were abandoned and eventually buried beneath the new city. Inside the interior of Old Ba Sing Se still lie ancient stone structures, a waterfall and pool, and the luminescent green crystals that gave Ba Sing Se its fame.

The Fire Nation Capital, also known as Capital City, is the seat of the government for the Fire Nation. It is home to the Fire Lord, the Royal Family, and nobles of the Fire Nation. The capital is located on the Capital Island, a large island in the western region of the Fire Nation. This city is one of the larger cities of the four nations. It has a distinct layout, consisting of a harbor surrounded by a dock and the Royal Plaza, an industrial harbor city behind the plaza, buildings and homes scattered around the surrounding hills, and finally, another neighborhood in the crater of a dormant volcano known as Caldera, where Fire Nation elite live around the Royal Palace. The city has an extensive defense mechanism and is, alongside Ba Sing Se, the most heavily fortified city in the World of Avatar.

The Northern Water Tribe is a division of the Water Tribe located within the realms of the North Pole. Its capital city, notable for being made almost entirely out of ice, is referred to by the same name. Built inside high walls of ice and surrounded by largely inhospitable tundra terrain, the city thrives in its isolation.

The Chief's temple is a large structure built on top the highest tier of the capital city and is one of the most recognizable landmarks. It can be seen from most anywhere in the city and stands like a monument, representing strength and power. In here, the chief and his advisers sit and make decisions regarding the tribe. The temple's design mimics that of a tiered pyramid. Leading up to the front entrance is a large staircase which is bordered on either side by a decorative pillar. A pool of water and a number of artificially designed waterfalls surround the building, giving it a unique ambiance; the liquid for this system is supplied by various pipelines that pour water into the pool from directly below the temple. The interior of the building is intricately designed, featuring a decorative arch with four pillars, two cauldron-shaped ice sculptures, carvings of Water Tribe symbols, a rug adorned with the insignia of the nation, and an artificial waterfall behind the arch.

This massive stretch of arctic tundra covers most of the North Pole. The inland tundra is mostly mountainous and inhabited by a diverse fauna. The valleys of the arctic mountain ranges also host small settlements, such as Yakone's village. However, the coastal arctic plains are extremely treacherous. Only highly skilled arctic hunters travel on the open plains, hunting the animals that live there, and they never stay longer than a few days at a time. Heavy winter blizzards constantly pelt the tundra, and unstable ice sheets often give way under the slightest pressure. Even experienced water benders and warriors think twice about venturing into this dangerous environment.

The Southern Water Tribe is the southern division of the Water Tribes. Its people are concentrated in its capital, a large harbor city at the coast of the South Pole,[1] but many also live in small settlements throughout the pole. The Southern Water Tribe is a confederation of several smaller tribes, led by chieftains and elders, who form a council that jointly govern the South Pole.

A Council of Chieftains and Elders officially govern the Southern Water Tribe, consisting of male and female representatives of the different cities, villages, tribes, and social classes within the settlements. The council assembles in the Southern Water Tribe Royal Palace, which serves as the formal seat of government in the South Pole.

In contrast to the mountainous landscape of the North Pole, the frozen plains of the South are broken only occasionally by mountains. The harsh terrain was made all the more dangerous by a brutal, unending storm that had battered the South for decades. Known as the Everstorm, this spiritually-charged blizzard rendered the land uninhabitable. Dark spirits were known to haunt the tundra's ice caves. Within the tundra lies a great frozen forest where many dark spirits reside. In the center of this sacred forest is a portal to the Spirit World, which is only accessible by the Avatar on a solstice. It is also the source of the southern lights. The Shipwreck | 0 | 0 | |

Air Nomads is a collective term for a nation of people who practice the discipline of airbending. One of the four major nations, the Air Nomads were wanderers by definition, but had four air temples, one at each corner of the globe, hidden away atop mountain ranges in the northern Earth Kingdom and on three remote islands. The theocratic Air Nomads were home to a monastic order of men and women who practiced airbending. Unlike the other nations, the people of the Air Nomads were, without any seen exception, all benders due to the high level of spirituality of their people.

Hidden high above the clouds and always on the move, this city is home to the bulk of the Air Nomads who don't reside within one of the various temples of the world. It was decided generations ago that the Air Nomads needed a more centralized hub for their people, and by using a mixture of technology and bending ability, they created this masterpiece of human ingenuity. While seemingly steam punk and wholly industrialized from the outside, within the various shells of the city exist a vast microcosm of the world; forests, plains, tundra lands, and even a small indoor sea give the people living here the chance to commune with nature as they would normally, all in the safety of the clouds. People come and go from the various temples across the world, making sure to never spend too much time isolated within the confines of the city, lest they forget about the world below the clouds entirely.

The Spirit World is a parallel plane of reality that coexists alongside the mortal world, and is home to the spirits, immortal supernatural entities which often embody different aspects of life and nature. All past lives of the Avatar reside in the Spirit World. It is very difficult and extremely rare for a human, other than the Avatar, to enter the Spirit World; conversely, only a handful of spirits are able to exist physically in the mortal world and they must give up their immortality to do so. The Spirit World and the physical world are closest together during the solstices, which makes it possible for spirits to manifest in the mortal world and for humans to pass into the Spirit World. There are also certain locations in the physical world which act as bridges to the Spirit World; these locations are often revered by the cultures living near them, such as the Spirit Oasis in the North Pole. The Avatar acts as a spiritual bridge between both worlds and can travel between them freely, though bending has no effect in the Spirit World.
